“Forty miles of washboard.
Then a bath.”
Saline Valley Warm Springs is the soak inside Death Valley, in a remote northwest corner about 40 miles from the nearest paved road. Recreational users began building the soaking tubs in the 1950s, and the tubs at Lower Spring and Palm Spring are kept in their historic form. The springs are clothing-optional.
Fire closure: on the night of September 15, 2026, a fire burned through the Lower Spring area. The burned area is closed by order of the superintendent. Since September 17, the camping area around Palm Spring, and between Lower Spring and Palm Spring, is open again.
Getting there takes a high-clearance vehicle with all-terrain tires, and weather can make it a 4WD trip. Either way in crosses a pass: North Pass, above 7,000 feet, or South Pass, at 5,997 feet. The springs are inside Death Valley, so the entrance fee applies: $30 per car, or $25 for up to two motorcycles, good for seven days.
Roads, Steel Pass, Eureka Dunes and the motorcycle rules are in our Saline Valley guide.

- Hours and cost: open year-round, no admission fee.
- Camping: a big parking area, primitive campsites and a vault toilet. Camp at least 100 feet from the spring.

Natural hot springs
in Nevada.
Nevada has more hot springs than any other state. Most are holes in the ground off backcountry roads; others feed old cattle troughs, which Nevadans call cowboy tubs. A few public-land soaks Travel Nevada points to:
- Spencer Hot Springs, near Austin: cowboy tubs off the Loneliest Road, with Big Smoky Valley views.
- Soldier Meadows, near Gerlach: public hot springs, plus private ones that need the owner’s permission.
- Virgin Valley Warm Springs, near Denio: next to a campground in the Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge.
- Gold Strike and Fish Lake Valley: above.
Some springs are not for soaking. Trego Hot Springs has tested positive for E. coli and Vibrio cholera, according to the Nevada Bureau of Land Management. Double Hot Springs runs above 185°F and is fenced off. The pools at Black Rock Hot Springs are too hot to enter.
