Field notes from just outside Pahrump, Nevada

Las Vegas to Tonopah. US 95, town by town.

Las Vegas to Tonopah is about 211 miles and four hours north on US 95, by way of Beatty and Goldfield. Here is how far each town is, the gas stops, the roads off it that are closed, the rest stops and where to stay.

How far is Tonopah from Las Vegas?

  • From downtown Las Vegas: about 211 miles, four hours.
  • From the Strip: about 215 miles.
  • From Pahrump: about 167 miles, north on Nevada 160 to US 95, a little over three hours.

It is US 95 the whole way. Tonopah, the Nye County seat, sits about halfway between Las Vegas and Reno, where US 6 crosses.

Indian Springs, about 45 miles

Creech Air Force Base is here. It opened in 1942 as a training field for what is now Nellis, was renamed for General Wilbur Creech on June 20, 2005, and is now the Air Force’s main hub for remotely piloted aircraft.

Mercury turnoff, about 65 miles

The Mercury exit leads to the Nevada National Security Site. It is not a sightseeing stop: only official visitors invited by an employee get in, and every person and vehicle is subject to search.

Amargosa Valley and Lathrop Wells, about 88 miles

Nevada 160 from Pahrump joins US 95 about 16 miles before this junction. At the Nevada 373 turn, the old Lathrop Wells, there are two truck stops, the Area 51 Alien Center and Amargosa Castle, plus a fireworks megastore. Nevada 373 runs south to Death Valley Junction. The valley also holds Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge and the five-square-mile Big Dune OHV area.

Beatty, about 118 miles

Nevada 374 heads west over Daylight Pass to Death Valley. Rhyolite ghost town and the Goldwell Open Air Museum are the big stops nearby. Full guide: Beatty, NV.

Nevada 267, about 152 miles

About 35 miles north of Beatty, Nevada 267 leaves US 95 for Scotty’s Castle. Bonnie Clare Road and Scotty’s Castle are closed for flood recovery, with no access even on foot; the Park Service listed no reopening date as of September 28, 2026.

Goldfield, about 184 miles

The Esmeralda County seat. Founded in 1902, Goldfield was for a while the biggest city in Nevada, with about 20,000 people. Around 250 live there now, with the 1908 Goldfield Hotel, the 1907 courthouse still in use and the International Car Forest of the Last Church just outside town. More in our Goldfield, NV guide.

  • Amargosa Valley (mile 88): the Area 51 Alien Center at the Nevada 373 junction sells gas and food, 5 AM to 11 PM daily.
  • Beatty (mile 118): the Arco/Rebel and the Death Valley Nut & Candy stop. Beatty also has the closest fast EV chargers to Death Valley.
  • Tonopah (mile 211): Love’s Travel Stop at 1170 US 95, by Radar Road, open 24 hours with unleaded and diesel. Eight Tesla Superchargers are at Patriots Park, 171 North Main, and standard EV chargers are at the south end of town across from Raley’s.

  • Goldfield, NV to Las Vegas: about 184 miles, three and a half hours.
  • Beatty to Las Vegas: about 118 miles, a little over two hours.
  • Amargosa Valley to Las Vegas: about 88 miles from the US 95 junction, an hour and 40 minutes.
  • Indian Springs, NV to Las Vegas, NV: about 45 miles, under an hour.

Rest stops

In 2016 NDOT broke ground on the Goldfield Visitor Center, on the east side of US 95 between First and Second streets, with a restroom, drinking fountains, a dog run and parking for big trucks, for Esmeralda County to maintain. Travel Nevada says to start a Goldfield visit there and pick up the map for the 190-stop Goldfield Historic Walking Tour.
